How The 3G Shut Down Might Affect You

With 5G slowly getting rolled out, some people might have forgotten that the inevitable shut down of 3G networks will go with it. For a lot of us, that doesn’t mean a whole lot because we’ve upgraded our smartphones to be 4G compatible. However, there are other devices that could be affected by the elimination of 3G networks, and you need to be aware and prepared.

There are devices other than smartphones that we use every day that we don’t even realize are utilizing 3G tech. We’re talking about home alarm systems, medical devices such as fall detectors, and even in-car crash detections and roadside assistance services like On-Star. Some car manufacturers have software upgrades that can ensure their systems function as they should, but some model cars might lose those services for good.

Fortunately, most home security companies have been preparing for the change and have been actively reaching out to customers over the last couple years to ensure they’ve been properly migrated. Still, some customers will inevitably get left behind. Most cars built over the past five years are running on 4G modems, but if you have a question, your best recourse is to contact your dealer and make sure things will continue to run as you expect them to. For other products, calling the manufacturer or service provider and asking question is your best bet.
