Grape-kun is a 21-year-old penguin from Tobu Zoo in Miyashiro, Japan. Grape was recently rejected by his partner Midori, whom had been his mate for over a decade. To make matters worse, he was left for a younger male, and grape began to drift away from the group. During a promotion for the zoo, a cardboard cut-out of an anthropomorphic female penguin called Hululu from the series Kemono Friends was placed in the penguin enclosure. Grape fell in love with Hululu and would stare for hours on end. When Hululu was removed during a typhoon, grape was noticeably distraught. Grape seemed happier and even began displaying nesting behavior. He even showed Hulu a courtship dance. Some time later Grape got sick and the zoo staff kept hululu by his side. Then tragedy struck and Grape died, the zoo said "The Humboldt penguin Grape-kun passed away yesterday. Sincere thanks to everyone for supporting him until now."
