Austrian man faces fine for calling police officers 'smurfs'

An Austrian man faces up to a $197 fine after describing police officers as "smurfs" in a warning about speed checks posted on Facebook. Authorities in Tyrol province imposed the fine on the unnamed man for violating "public decency" by "defaming two police officers." The man posted in a Facebook group alerting people to watch out for the "two smurfs standing with lasers." Well a police officer happened to be in that Facebook group and filed a complaint. The man says the term "smurfs" were meant as a harmless joke and plans to defend himself at regional police headquarters.
