An unusual arrest was made in a 14-year-old rape case by the Florida forensic genealogy unit. According to police reports, a University of Tampa student was walking back to her dorm in 2007 after attending the Gasparilla Pirate Festival. She says a man offered to walk her to her dorm where he allegedly raped her; DNA evidence was collected at the time, but no match was found. Officers recently took that evidence and started checking it against people that had opted in for police to check their DNA in criminal investigations and found a match. They traveled to West Virginia and took a new DNA sample from 44-year-old Jared Vaughn, which was a match. Vaughn is now under arrest in the case.
