Those who watched Sunday night’s Buffalo Bills/Kansas City Chiefs game were privy to a weather delay that included some healthy banter about peanut butter & jelly. It seems that players were fed PB&J during the break, but the 70/30 peanut butter-to-jelly ratio started a debate about how the classic sandwich should be done correctly. Enter Charlotte Clymer, who offered her non-negotiable thoughts on the matter:

  • The peanut butter-to-jelly ratio should be 2:1.
  • The exception is when you’re using two heel pieces of bread, but even then, there should be no more than 40% jelly.
  • Grape jelly is the standard bearer, but strawberry preserves are “permissible.”
  • Always go smooth over chunky.
  • There’s no need for “fancy” peanut butters like Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods…it’s just PB&J.
  • Never use pre-swirled PB&J. It’s just wrong.
  • White bread is king, wheat bread is acceptable, and a croissant substitute can be “orgasmic.”
  • Separate utensils for the peanut butter and the jelly. Please.
  • Eat it within ten minutes.
  • Peanut butter goes in the pantry…not the refrigerator.
