A free-diving “celebrity” is suing Netflix for defamation, claiming their new film “No Limit” makes a clear accusation about him. Francois “Pippin” Ferreras says that, while the movie claims to be fictional, it insinuates that he murdered his late wife, Audrey Mastre.
Free diving is a sport in which swimmers descend far below the surface of a body water with no breathing equipment. Mastre died in 2002 while diving in the Dominican Republic, reportedly after the device that was supposed to help Mastre’s return to the surface malfunctioned.
“No Limit” follows a fictional couple that Ferreras alleges is based on him and his late wife. He has taken legal issue with the husband’s treatment of the wife and a scene in which the husband very clearly (spoiler!) tampers with the wife’s diving equipment. The diver’s attorney, Alexander Rufus-Isaacs, called the film “clear and despicable libel.”
