There might be a whiff of cannabis tolerance in the air emitting from the U.S. government. A leaked letter from the U.S. Health and Human Services shows the agency is in favor of moving weed from a Schedule 1 controlled substance to a Schedule 3 substance. In the past, the Drug Enforcement Agency has refused to make such a move, though more and more states have accepted cannabis for medical and recreational use. For those who don’t know…
- Schedule 1 drugs, like heroin, LSD, and ecstasy, have “no accepted clinical use” and have “high abuse potential”
- Schedule 3 drugs, like Tylenol with codeine, anabolic steroids, and ketamine, have “low to moderate potential for abuse” and have been found to have “some form of medicinal value”
Approving this change would open up more opportunities for cannabis research, and ease confusion between states that’ve started to accept and legalize weed and the federal government, which continues to strictly regulate it.
