Man Flees in Batman Costume After Shootout with Neighbor

A Bellingham man is in custody after an exchange of gunfire that involved a Batman costume.

Police say the victim was visiting the suspect at his apartment on West Maplewood on Wednesday afternoon, November 1st, when the suspect began punching the victim without any warning.

The victim retreated to his unit, but the suspect, identified as 60-year-old Thomas Paine, began pounding on his door and yelling at him.

He opened the door and saw Paine at the bottom of a staircase with a gun.

Paine fired, missing the victim but striking the apartment door.

The victim armed himself and fired back at Paine, but also missed.

Paine went back to his apartment, changed into a Batman costume, and attempted to leave the area on foot.

Bellingham Police on patrol confronted him while he attempted to leave and he was taken into custody.

Paine remains at the Whatcom County Jail without bail.
