Tesla Car Battery Explodes in Home After Being Removed and Charged Indoors

Police say a Tesla car battery caught fire Saturday afternoon inside a Cary home.

According to police, the owners of a Tesla removed one of the batteries from the vehicle and took it inside the house to charge it.

While it was being charged, the battery short-circuited, and heavy smoke was released inside the home.

Four people inside the home were evaluated for smoke inhalation.

Telsa vehicles have two batteries installed: a lithium ion battery and a standard 12-volt car battery for its low voltage systems.

While charging, the 12-volt battery experienced a short circuit.

Broadcastify radio traffic reveals what exactly happened inside the house.

"It looks like it's the smaller of the two batteries from the car, in the kitchen charging it up, and then it exploded," the dispatcher said.

"A neighbor went inside to see if he couldn't extinguish the fire, so he is gonna have that smoke plus dry chem that he inhaled."

Car experts don't recommend charging your car's battery inside because a faulty battery could cause an explosion or fire.
