What age do you consider “old?” New research looks into what different generations think “old” means and for some of them, it’s a surprisingly small number.
The study from Wellsoon at Practice Plus Group involves 2-thousand adults of all ages and it reveals:
- Gen Z, which is made up of those under the age of 27, thinks old age hits when you’re in your late 50s.
- That means Gordon Ramsay, Mike Tyson, Halle Berry and Salma Hayek, who are all 57, would all be old folks to them.
- According to Gen Z, retirement is basically just sitting in an armchair (20%) and “puttering” around (16%).
- But baby boomers think 60 is the new 40, with one in five of them feeling as much as 20 years younger than their true age.
- Boomers are the most active generation, with 68% considering themselves an active person.
- They spend an average of four more hours outdoors outside of work hours, compared to other generations.
- They’re also more likely to enjoy traveling and to spend time exercising (56%) than Gen Z, who are least likely to (39%).
- That may be why 18% of boomers say they’re having the time of their lives now.
- Overall, two-thirds of participants say they feel more youthful than they are.
- When asked what “aging” means to them, a quarter of baby boomers say it’s not being as healthy as you are when you’re younger, while 22% of millennials say it’s losing your looks and your appearance changing.
- One of the perks of getting older is learning to appreciate your body, which boomers say happened when they were 38.
