Have you ever burned your feet on hot sand at the beach? Here's the worst possible version of that: A 42-year-old guy from Belgium had to be hospitalized in Vegas after walking around barefoot in DEATH VALLEY.
He decided to go for a short walk last Saturday in an area called Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. It was 123 degrees, and the sand itself was much hotter.
At some point on his walk, he either lost his flip-flops in the sand, or they broke. And he ended up with THIRD-DEGREE BURNS on his feet.
His family called for help, and other tourists had to carry him to the parking lot. (Carrying someone in 120 degrees sounds fun!)
Rescuers wanted to life-flight him out, because the burns were severe and he was in a LOT of pain. But it was too hot for a helicopter to land safely. So an ambulance took him to another landing spot at a higher elevation, where it was only 109.
Third-degree burns destroy two layers of skin, and can even damage muscles and bones. So he'll be hobbled for quite some time.
