At the US-Mexico border, United States border agents seized a truck carrying more than $5 million worth of meth hidden inside a shipment of watermelons. The drugs, wrapped in plastic painted in two shades of green to resemble the fruit, were placed among actual watermelons. A week prior, officials at the same border crossing discovered almost 300kg of meth hidden in a shipment of celery. Hiding drugs among produce is a common method for smuggling illicit substances across borders, with banana shipments being the most popular. Recently, officers have found narcotics in Gouda cheese and avocados as well. The driver was handed over to Homeland Security officials. Mexican drug cartels are the leading producers and suppliers of meth to the United States.
