Salmonella outbreak linked to pet hedgehogs

17 people across 11 states have now been infected with salmonella typhimurium, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says is likely tied to pet hedgehogs. 87% of those sick did come into contact with a hedgehog. At least two people have been hospitalized, but no deaths are reported. The CDC said “Hedgehogs can carry salmonella germs in their droppings while appearing healthy and clean.” They also warn not to kiss or snuggle hedgehogs. Salmonella infections can cause diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal cramps.
