Man Pleads Guilty To Felonies Over Effort To Create Giant Sheep Hybrids

A Montana man is pleading guilty to two felony wildlife crimes over a years-long effort to create giant sheep hybrids. Eighty-year-old Arthur "Jack" Schubarth owns an "alternative livestock" ranch that stretches 215 acres, according to a press release from the Department of Justice. The DOJ says Schubarth tried to create the species by importing parts of the largest sheep species in the world to create cloned embryos to implant in a female sheep on his ranch. His goal was to sell the species to hunting facilities. He conspired with at least five others beginning in 2013 to genetically engineer the giant sheep for high prices from shooting preserves.
