Chinese activists say they have rescued about 68 dogs from being slaughtered at a festival in the city of Yulin. Humane Society International reports that the dogs were taken in while being transported to the controversial dog meat festival. The activists said that local authorities would not get involved, and some evidence suggests the dogs could have been pets. The festival continues to go on despite some restrictions and fines by local governments over the past decade. Activists say 30-million dogs across Asia are killed every year for their meat.
