U.S. regulators are giving a British biotech firm the green light to release over two-million genetically modified mosquitoes in Florida and California. The move comes as part of an expanded effort to battle the transmission of diseases like Zika, canine heartworm and dengue fever. Biotech firm Oxitec previously released over 100-thousand mosquitoes in the Florida Keys in 2021. They later called the experiment a "success" in a release approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. The goal is for the non-biting males to mate with invasive female mosquitoes to produce nonviable offspring that will cut down on the spread of transmissible diseases.
