New research is revealing that a triceratops known as "Big John" was likely killed by an ancient infection. The dinosaur, which lived 66 to 69 million years ago, is one of the largest of its kind ever discovered. A study published in the journal "Scientific Papers" by paleontologist Ruggero D'Anastasio noted Big John had a traumatic injury to its armored neck frill. It was likely caused by a fight with another adult triceratops. D'Anastasio said it's "possible" the wound became infected and killed the dinosaur months later. He pointed to signs of inflammation surrounding the injury as evidence. After public displays in Trieste and Paris, Big John was sold to a private collector who D'Anastasio says if keeping it accessible for scientific research.
