Year In Review: July & August

July

  • Troubled actor Ezra Miller was accused of choking a woman in Germany. Known only as “Nadia,” the woman claims Ezra attacked her after she asked them to stop smoking in her apartment.
  • Danny Masterson tried- and failed- to have his rape charge thrown out. A judge ordered Masterson to stand trial after rejecting his attorney’s claim that the 19 years that elapsed since the first accusation created prejudice against the “That 70’s Show” actor.
  • “Loki” star Tom Huddleston and his actress fiancée Zawe Ashton announced they were engaged. Then, on the “Mr. Malcolm’s List” red carpet, the one-time-Broadway-costars revealed Ashton’s baby bump.
  • Lindsey Lohan took the vow! Lilo took to Instagram and her rep confirmed that the “Parent Trap” star married Iragi-financier Bader Shammas. Lohan called herself “the luckiest woman in the world” when expressing her joy on social media.
  • A judge issued a restraining order against pop star Ricky Martin, who was accused of domestic abuse by an anonymous person. Martin denied all claims, calling them “false and fabricated.”
  • Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker was released from the hospital after surviving “severe, life-threatening pancreatitis.” The rocker confirmed his wife, Kourtney Kardashian, was with him throughout the experience and that her family was very supportive.
  • Multi-baby-daddy Nick Cannon subtly lashed out at his baby mamas, saying his children would always be friends even if their mothers aren’t “in agreeance.” In a freestyle rap on the radio, Cannon went on to further back his kids, saying “I got you for life, and I’ll always be there.”
  • “The Godfather” star James Caan passed away at 82. His family confirmed via social media that Caan died but did not disclose cause or location. They asked for fans to “respect their privacy.”
  • Former “Glee” star Lea Michele officially took over the lead role in Broadway’s “Funny Girl.” The troubled show struggled with a heavily-criticized Beanie Feldstein at the helm, and Michele called stepping into the role “a dream come true.”
  • Amber Heard made two attempts to have the verdict against her in the defamation suit brought by Johnny Depp thrown out. The actress claimed juror fraud and that the amount awarded to Depp was excessive. She lost both.
  • The ex-wife of Donald Trump, Ivana Trump, died at age 73. Ivana was found at the bottom of the stairs in her home and was immediately declared dead from cardiac arrest. Investigators also saw signs of a fall, but couldn’t be sure if that contributed to her death.
  • The Hollywood romance continued, as Jennifer Lopez/J Lo and Ben Affleck got married. After the rumor mill ran wild, court papers finally confirmed the superstar couple were married in Nevada. J Lo also legally changed her name to “Jennifer Lynn Affleck.”
  • Fandom of pop star Harry Styles reached dizzying heights as Texas State University announced it would teach a class focused around the Brit star. “Harry Styles And The Cult Of Celebrity: Identity, the Internet and European Pop Culture” will officially be offered in Spring 2023 at the college.
  • Pop star Ricky Martin was finally allowed to break his silence on harassment allegations following the case’s dismissal. Martin’s own nephew, 21, withdrew the claims he made in court with Martin’s lawyers saying “never anything more than a troubled individual making false allegations with absolutely nothing to substantiate them.”
  • Nick Cannon wants all the ladies out there to know what his expectations are. The rapper/comedian is very clear that he has no interest in having one partner, calling his philosophy “consensual non-monogamy.” At the time, Nick was about to welcome his eighth child to the world.
  • “Goodfellas” actor Paul Sorvino died at age 83. Sorvino, who was also the father of Oscar winning actor Mira Sorvino, was said to have passed away from “natural causes.” His daughter and other celebs such as Forest Whitaker took to social media to praise the late actor.

August

  • A “Star Wars” legend passed away. Nichelle Nichols, better known as “Lt. Uhura” in the original series, died from heart failure at the age of 89. Breaking ground in a number of areas, including one of the first interracial kisses in television, Nichols also helped NASA recruit female employees in the 1970s.
  • Nick Cannon may have a lot of kids, but he is making time for them. The celeb dad bought out a water park to treat his two oldest kids, Moroccan and Monroe, to some fun in the sun.
  • The Hollywood Walk Of Fame announced its next star was going to SNL vet Kenan Thompson. Thompson’s star was set to go in next to SNL producer Lorne Michaels’ star during a ceremony at a later date.
  • Nine months into a relationship racked with controversy, Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson called it quits. Opinions were divided about the split; some say it was the couple’s busy schedules, while others claim the age difference strained their time together. And of course, there’s always Kanye West…
  • Add “theft” to actor Ezra Miller’s growing list of problems. The troubled star of the upcoming DC film “The Flash” has been charged with felony burglary after stolen bottles of alcohol from a neighbor’s home in Vermont were linked to Miller.
  • Tennis legend Serena Williams announced she would be winding down her time as a professional athlete. The 23-time Grand Slam champion confirmed the US Open would be the final tournament of her storied career. But she promised to stay busy, concentrating on he venture capital firm Serena Ventures.
  • “The Wonder Years” star Fred Savage was fired from the reboot of the classic sitcom following allegations of “inappropriate conduct.” The firing occurred after a number of women complained about Savage’s behavior towards women on set. The actor later denied all claims against him in a statement.
  • The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office confirmed Anne Heche’s cause of death during her fatal car accident. Heche perished from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, but the Coroner also noted part of Heche’s chest was crushed during the crash which may have contributed.
  • The Cannon brood keeps on growing. Nick Cannon confirmed he is having baby #9 with model Brittany Bell- their third together. The comedian took to Instagram to make the announcement that #9 would actually arrive before the previously-announced baby #10 with Abby de la Rosa. Anyone else having a hard time keeping track?
