Close to 100 fire hydrants have been stolen in Los Angeles County so far this year. Eighty-five fire hydrants have been stolen in unincorporated communities, while 14 others have been stolen in Lynwood. Authorities say thieves are selling them at metal recycling yards. In South L.A., Golden State Water Company is now installing locked shields on fire hydrants to cover bolts, in hopes of making them tougher to steal.
