An East Bay Area woman is out thousands of dollars after falling victim to what authorities call the "grandson scam." The woman identified as Donna said she got a call from someone who sounded like her grandson, saying he was in jail after hitting a pregnant woman while driving. The alleged grandson put another man on the line who said he was a lawyer and that they needed 75-hundred dollars in cash to bail the grandson out. A courier was sent to Donna's home in Rossmoor, California to collect that amount, plus another five-thousand the man said was needed for legal fees. Donna says the people at her bank questioned why she was taking out so much money in cash but she had been told to not say anything or her grandson could be in trouble. Authorities say the whole setup is a scam to prey on the elderly and it's not the first time they've heard about it being used in the region.
