People who are bitten by venomous snakes often make two dangerous mistakes. They wait too long to seek treatment, or they use outdated methods to treat the bite themselves. A study on snake bites from the University of Florida shows it's often more than an hour before a victim is seen by a doctor. More than ten percent of bite victims were found to have first tried methods that are no longer considered effective, like using tourniquets or sucking out the venom. Some seven to eight thousand people are bitten by venomous snakes each year in the U.S.
