California surfer R.J. LaMendola came face-to-face with a sea lion that appeared to be possessed as it repeatedly charged him while he was on his board. LaMendola says the animal had its “teeth bared” as staged an unrelenting attack which landed him in the hospital to have his bitten buttock treated. It turns out, LaMendola wasn’t completely crazy. Local wildlife authorities confirmed that the region has been dealing with “animals affected by Domoic Acid Toxicosis,” a “neurological condition caused by toxic algae blooms” which has been driving normally docile sea creatures into “aggressive, uncharacteristic behavior.”
